all done...for a little while

Five hundred pounds of compost somehow never looks like much after you've spread it around - even over just two rows!  We've been working on the last of the large plantings for the year over the past week, finishing up with what will be January's lettuce and spinach in the greenhouse.  There will still be a few more quick-growing rows of radishes or green onions to tuck in here or there, but it's just about all done until early next year.  "Planting season" here is a never-ending process that begins with endless flats of seedlings in January, and finally comes to an end with the winter greenhouse veggies and over-wintered crops in late October.  And it sure feels nice to be "done" for a little while, even it it's just for a few months.

Carrots are back again!  They're still a bit on the small side, but the carrots came up so thick in late summer that they could stand a bit of (really late) thinning.  And they're here in almost every color of the rainbow, from yellows and oranges to purple.  These all taste just as good and just the same as an orange carrot.  Why grow carrots in six different colors?  Why not?  The emerging broccoli crows are still looking skimpy, but given a warm sunny week, I might just have a few for the weekend.  If not, definitely next week.

Shares are still available for our Winter CSA program until the end of the month.  And there are just four more weekends to prowl through the Midtown Farmers Market for your fresh local farm goods!
