fall's glory

Ha.  Alright, so my fall crops are never in a million years going to look like that.  If they ever did, I'm not sure I would be able to bring myself to harvest any of it.  I'd slowly starve to death while admiring all those picture-perfect rows.  Around here, things are forever weedier and messier (and I plant vegetables in straight rows to save myself a lot of aggravation).  But the late fall and early winter crops are really starting to produce!  November and December are our 'second spring,' with just as much if not more variety than we can do in April.  And it all tends to be tastier.  Greens and cabbages and roots are so much more tender, so much sweeter this time of year than they are in the spring.  Over the next few months, I expect to continue to have everything on the list below, and we're still expecting red and savoy cabbage, full heads of lettuce, spinach, leeks, beets, fennel, celery, and more.

And yes, there are just three more weekends to get to the Midtown Farmers Market for your fresh local farm goods - that's it until the markets re-open in April.  If you'd like to keep your kitchen stocked with fresh foods all through the off-season, take another look at our Winter CSA program.  Current CSA members, if your balance is getting low, you may simply add to your account in any amount you'd like.  We also sell here from the farm year-round, including through the winter, if you happen to live in the area.

In other news, we will be out of town on a short vacation next week - no pick-up or deliveries on Wednesday Nov. 7th, but we will be back for the weekend pick-up and Midtown Farmers Market.   We're also anticipating at a possible frost this week, which may bring an end to the tomatoes?  Or not?  The weather forecasters called for Sandy to bring torrential rain and wind here all weekend, but that never happened.  As always, it's a wait-and-see affair!
