October already! Which means just a few more weeks for warm-season crops like eggplant and okra! We've had a very light rain all day today - thankfully none of the recent torrential storms. It was perfect transplanting weather, so the day was spent setting out the last round of the cool-season starts like spinach, brussel sprouts, and broccoli. Yesterday I got the washed-out winter beets and carrots re-seeded. It's a relief to see our crops being gently watered in for once! Many of most our popular cool-season vegetables are going to be running late this year, but hold on, they'll get here eventually.
I receive frequent questions as to who does what on the farm, as if we had an army of employees running amok, each to their own specialized tasks. Farmers do need to wear quite a few different hats. So to set it all straight, here's a list of who does what around the place:
- Head salesman & charmer of farmers market patrons: Andy
- Behind-the-scenes writer and marketer: Beth
- Plant Whisperer: Beth
- Machinist, repairman, and gadget-guy: Andy
- Irrigation Specialist (usually accompanied by copious cussing): Andy
- Weeding Queen (also usually accompanied by copious cussing): Beth
- Greenhouse Fairy: Beth
- Fencing Guru: Andy
- Tractor Cowboy (my legs are too short to reach the clutch/gas/brake): Andy
- Accountant (job gleefully outsourced if qualified candidate is willing to work for kale): Beth
- Chicken-tamer: Andy
- Bee-wrangler: Beth
- Chief corn and onion shucker (you didn't really think they came out of the mud that clean, did you?): Andy
- Chief greens-picker and washer and re-washer (you didn't really think they came out of the mud that clean, did you?): Beth
- Drill Mistress/Task-Master and Keeper of the All-holy Farm Schedule: Beth
- Maintainer of Farm Crew's Sanity ("we need to take a few hours off once in a while!"): Andy
- last but not least, because no operation runs well without these two essential positions:
- Head Cook: Beth
- ...and Bottle Washer: Andy
Hope that clears it all up for you :)
