tomatoes in 3...2...1

It's that time of year: I get asked umpteen-million times per week when all your favorite summer treats will be here!  So I suppose an update is in order.  Keep in mind these are just educated guesses; nature will do what it does, without my wishes in mind...

Sungold cherry tomatoes in possibly two weeks, the rest of the tomatoes in about three.  It always amazes me how fast the tomato vines grow in June.  Right now they don't look like we're three weeks from harvesting, but the plants went in on time, we've had great 'mater-growing weather since then, and barring any disasters, the tomatoes always seem to come in on cue by the last weekend in June.

Corn in as little as two weeks.  Sweet onions about that same time.  Berries shouldn't be long behind those.  Basil and hot peppers should be here right in time to pair with the tomatoes.  Sweet peppers, eggplant, okra, and melons probably not until late July or early August - I hope.  I tweaked our planting calendar a bit this year.  Most summers we have everything under the sun ready to harvest in July.  We pick all day, every day, six days a week.  Some weekends we just can't fit it all on the truck to get it to the market.  Then come August, we're ready to collapse.  I felt like I was sitting on my hands waiting, and waiting, then waiting some more, but really I just delayed some of these late summer goodies by a few weeks to try and spread out our summer workload a bit.

All that sounds delicious, but don't forget that there are still plenty of good things to eat right now!  While much of what we have now should continue to be available for a few more months, the chard and kale, beets and carrots, cabbage and fennel are the last of our "spring" crops, and usually disappear by late June or early July.  Which is just a few weeks away!

In other news, our CSA program has been very full for quite some time, but we are now in a position to take additional members! - for pick-up on Wednesdays only.  Our Wednesday locations include the Raleigh Downtown Farmers Market mid-day on City Plaza, Harmony Farms on Millbrook Ave in north Raleigh, and here at the farm.  Sorry, but we cannot accept new members who wish to pick up at the Midtown Farmers Market.  Our weekend pick-up locations are still quite full.

Thanks so much for your business, eat well, and have a great week!
